ABOUT CINCINNATI RHEUMATIC DISEASE STUDY GROUP

The Cincinnati Rheumatic Disease Study Group (CRDSG) is an organization of practicing rheumatologists dedicated to improving the care of patients with arthritis and other rheumatic diseases. It strives to do this by performing rigorous and ethical clinical research with the goal of developing better treatments for all patients with these conditions.

Our History

The CRDSG was founded in 1991 and now includes 9 board certified rheumatologists located throughout Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. The CRDSG has performed more than 120 research studies involving more than 1000 patients in diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Osteoporosis, and Osteoarthritis. The CRDSG participates only in those studies which it believes are likely to benefit the patients who are participating, and which have the potential of helping millions of other patients with similar diseases in the future. Some of the medications that the Cincinnati Rheumatic Disease Study Group has helped develop include: Remicade, Enbrel, Simponi, Orencia, Actemra, Rituxan, Xeljans, Benlysta, Kinaret, Fosamax, and Celebrex among others.

Current Research Agenda

The CRDSG is currently working on multiple other “biologic” agents (protein molecules designed to block certain steps in inflammation) which will hopefully advance the quest for a cure of these disabling and disheartening diseases. It is also involved in trying to develop less expensive versions (“bio-similars”) for some of the biologic therapies already available. These bio-similar medications could make it possible for more patients to be treated with less of a financial burden.

Our Mission

Our Mission is to improve the care of patients with arthritis and other rheumatic diseases by performing rigorous and ethical clinical research. To do this we believe that we should test only those medications are safe in preliminary studies and have a reasonable expectation of being as effective or more effective than other medications currently available. We also firmly believe patients should participate only if they have a chance of receiving study drug and potentially benefiting directly from their participation in the research.
